Six top tips for combatting colic

Colic is when a baby cries a lot but there is no obvious cause; it is a common problem which should get better on its own.

Every baby’s different, and what works for one may not work for another. However, these are some techniques that health visitors suggest you try if you’re faced with a baby who cries all the time.

Remember, if you’re worried or finding it hard to cope, talk to your health visitor or GP and make sure you get the support you need.

Hold baby close, and gently rock them.

Many babies like resting against your shoulder. It can help to take deep breaths while you’re doing this so the baby can feel your heartbeat as slow and steady.

Keep baby as upright as possible during feeding.

That way, they’re less likely to swallow air along with their milk. Make sure you burp them after feeding.

Give your baby a warm bath.

Bathing your baby may help to recreate the sensation of being in the womb.

Try a gentle massage.
