Outcome Stars: Identifying your strengths as a parent

Parenting is extremely rewarding, but at times can feel hard work and sometimes overwhelming. We all want to do it well, but sometimes it’s hard to know what is going well and when we need extra support.

Within Warwickshire Health Visiting, we want to work in partnership with parents. One of the tools we use to help with this, is the Outcome Stars. The Outcome stars are a group of 44 stars which are strengths based and used with families to identify what’s going well and what areas parents require support in. The star assessment is completed together with the parent, and all the information is then placed upon a star shape showing strengths and needs via an image of a parent and baby star.

We have two stars we are currently using with families with children under 5 years of age. At your antenatal contact and 6 week postnatal review, your Health Visitor will complete the Parent and Baby Outcome star with you. If you and your health visitor identify an area you require more support in, together you will look at the options available and decide what support is best for you and your family. We also use the Family Star Plus outcome star to support families who require additional support around parenting.

We have been using Outcome Stars since 2019 and parents have told us: “I like that it’s not just about baby” and “It helped me realise what was going well”.
