Pushchair, buggy and pram safety

Pushchairs purchased from a legitimate source should meet strict regulations. By following these tips when buying and taking care of your pushchair, you should ensure safety for your child when travelling in one.

Using a faulty or damaged pram, pushchair or buggy can result in injuries like trapped fingers or falls.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions around securing your baby in a pram or pushchair. There have been rumours circulating online that placing your child upside down or backwards in their pushchair helps them to keep cool. DO NOT follow this advice, it is false and potentially very dangerous.

What do I need to check when buying a pushchair?

Whether you’re buying new or using second-hand, always look out for either of these safety standards:

  • BS EN 1888-1:2018+A1:2022
  • BS 7409 : 1996

Always check that the product is safe and has not been involved in a product recall. Remember that non-reclining seats are not suitable for children under 6 months of age.

Here are some key safety features to look out for:

  • Ensure that there are five straps in the harness
  • Check that the brakes lock and unlock safely
  • Make sure that the pram unfolds fully and safely and that all fixings are secure
  • Check for torn fabric or sharp edges

Buggies and pushchairs are susceptible to wear and tear as you’re using them, so it’s good practice to regularly check your child’s pushchair for the above.

What are the day-to-day tips for pushchair safety?

As well as looking out for damage, the following tips will ensure safety in your day-to-day use:

  • NEVER cover the pushchair with a blanket or covering, this can cause your child to overheat
  • Keep your child strapped in and supervised at all times
  • Remove your child from the pram before making any adjustments to it
  • Don’t place bags or coats on the back or handles of the pushchair, this can cause it to tip over
  • Avoid using any non-approved accessories. If you’re using a buggy board, ensure it’s suitable for the buggy and has been professionally fitted
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when assembling
  • Remember that incorrect folding or storage can damage the product
  • Ensure that any damage is assessed and repaired professionally
