Check out our top tips for making healthy meals for the whole family without breaking the bank.
Try to minimise waste
Shop savvy – Think tins/frozen/look for supermarket offers
Organise yourself – Plan your weekly menus, write a list of what you’ll need and shop online to avoid impulse purchases
Banish brands – Supermarkets often have their own version which you may find is either very similar or preferable
Eat more veg – Meat dishes can be bulked out with extra vegetables and/or beans, lentils or peas, all of which are cheaper and better for us!
Don’t cook separate meals – Encourage the whole family to eat the same meal together. This is good for children’s social skills as well as being good for physical health.
Look at the labels – The traffic lights help us to make decisions based on how healthy a food item is.
Use the Change4Life Food scanner App – So that you know what’s in the food you’re buying.
Use the web – Look online for healthy low cost meal ideas.
Cook in batches – Make one for now and one for the freezer so when you need a meal in a hurry you don’t have to compromise on health
