Health for U5s/Kids/Teens websites accessibility: A step-by-step guide
We have created a step-by-step guide which explains how to use the ReciteMe accessibility toolbar to support navigation of the Health for Under 5s, Health for Kids and Health for Teens websites.
The websites include the ReciteMe toolbar, an in-built accessibility system that allows service users to access various features, such as text-to-speech, translation and a screen mask.
How to enable the toolbar
To enable the toolbar, click on the symbol on the lower right-hand side of the website highlighted in the first image below. This will open the ReciteMe toolbar on the top of the webpage.
Text to Speech:
Clicking on this gives various option boxes to click: turn text to speech on or off; play automatically; read whole page of content; movable player controls; change voice to male or female; change reading speed; and view keyboard controls.
How to alter the font:
Go up to the blue + and – buttons to increase or decrease text size. The ‘Aa’ button provides options to change the font height and letter spacing, plus choose an alternative font. The ‘FT’ buttons enables or disables the focus text option.
Translation:
When you click on the Translation button in an article, A search bar appears where you can type in and search 134 languages. When you find the one you need, click on it and it will change the text in that article into that language. If you hover the cursor arrow over a sentence with text to speech enabled, it will begin reading that out loud in the chosen language. To change back to English, click on the Translate button again and press the reset button or type in English.
Colour Theme:
When you click on Colour Theme, you have boxes to tick for Dark Mode and Monochrome, plus you can click on a range of Dark or Light colour options. To change it back to normal view, click on the ‘Reset to default’ button.
Ruler Options:
Clicking on Ruler Options, you can click on a Ruler box which brings up an onscreen ruler you can use to move up and down the page. You can change the colour, opacity level and mov it with your mouse or keyboard keys.
Cursor Options:
This button allows you to change the size of the cursor and the colour of it (black or white).
Screen Mask:
This option enables just a section of the screen to be viewed to reduce clutter. Click on the Screen Mask box to enable it. You can also change its colour, opacity level and window size.
Page Options:
This button gives you a number of boxes to click which can pause animations and videos, hide images, view image description, and enter plain text mode.
Page Structure:
This opens up to show the different sections of the article you are viewing, so you can click quickly to sections that may be of interest.
Dictionary:
This opens up a search box where you can select a word or type a word in to get its definition.
Simplify Content:
Clicking on this button allows the browser AI to attempt to simplify the page. Depending on how the page is structured, this does not always work but is worth trying if needed.
Page Summariser:
This enables a Page Summary box to open which tells you the average reading time of the page, a summary of the information in the article, and explanations of acronyms in the article.
Download Audio:
To download audio to listen to later, click on the Download Audio button and it will give you a message to select some text. Place the mouse at the start of the text you wish to use and click and hold the mouse until you have reached end of the text you want to download. Then let go of the mouse and it will automatically create an audio MP3 file which will download to your default download folder/location.
Information:
This gives options to view a toolbar tutorial, plus other links to the ReciteMe company.
Reset Toolbar:
Clicking this button resets all the preferences you have made with the toolbar and buttons. Do this if you accidentally set up some toolbar options that you don’t want any more.
