Looking after your baby’s teeth is very important, and you should register them with a dentist and arrange a check up before their first birthday, or as soon as their first baby tooth comes through.
Those who give birth are entitled to free NHS dental care up until their baby’s first birthday.

What happens on the first visit?
Your baby’s first visit to the dentist is likely to be short, but it will allow you both to get used to the clinic and feel comfortable.
You will be asked to complete a form so the dental practice has all of your baby’s details before you are called in to see the dentist for the check-up.
The dentist may count your baby’s teeth and will check that they are healthy. Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t stay still for the examination, this is completely normal as it’s a new experience for them and will get better the more times that you visit.
The dentist can check your baby’s teeth while they sit on your lap, are in your arms or in any other position that is comfortable for them.
After the examination, the dentist will give you some advice on how to care for your baby’s teeth and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions or raise any concerns.
After the first check-up, the dentist will advise you when you need to make an appointment based on your baby’s needs.
Top tips for a positive first visit to the dentist
- Try to book an appointment earlier in the day when your baby is likely to be more rested and relaxed
- Make the experience as fun as possible; you could take some toys to keep your little one busy while you wait
- Take their favourite cuddly toy, comforter or blanket into the surgery with you to help them feel comfortable and safe
