The STORK programme educates parents, carers and family to reduce the risks of newborn and infant mortality.
STORK stands for: Supportive Training, Offering Reassurance and Knowledge to parents, carers and families.
Leicester Hospitals works with the STORK programme to lower baby and infant death within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Some parents and carers will access this STORK programme via the Home Care Team, STORK facilitators and Maternity Services for vulnerable women.
All parents, carers and their families can access online practical information and support from STORK to help keep their babies safe in the first few months of life.
The topics are covered:
- the harmful effects of smoking during and after pregnancy
- safe sleeping and lowering the risk for Sudden Infant Death
- coping with a crying baby
- breast feeding support
- how to recognise the signs of illness in babies
- basic life support
- vaccination
- where to find support with healthy lifestyles
- what to do if a child is choking (for older children)
- domestic and sexual violence

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust runs a confidential secure text messaging service for parents of children aged 0-19 years called Chat Health. The service operates Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, excluding bank holidays. All texts will be responded to by a public health nurse (health visitor/school nurse) within 24 hours. Outside of the service working hours, you’ll receive a message back to inform you that your text will be responded to once the line reopens.

The Helpline’s qualified health and administrative professionals offer easy to access, safe and free advice, support and signposting.
