What support is available? Introducing DadPad.
Having a baby can be exciting, but it can also bring about big changes that can leave you feeling left out, scared and even overwhelmed. Not only do you have a new baby to care for, but you are often busy supporting your partner with their health and wellbeing too. It sounds exhausting! If that is how you feel, then you are not alone and your local health visiting team is here to help.
We offer every family at least five contacts with their health visiting team, from an antenatal appointment from the 28th week of pregnancy onwards to a development review when your child reaches the age of two. These appointments aren’t just for mum because we know dads are just as important in helping to give their baby the best start in life. We are keen to meet you too, find out about how you are feeling and offer support and advice as you need it.
DadPad
DadPad is a free app which has lots of useful tips to help you build a strong bond with your baby and give you confidence in your new role. This is free whether you live in West Sussex or Brighton and Hove. Please go to your app store to download and register using your post-code. Remember:
- You are important too! Talking and playing and having skin to skin time with your baby releases happy hormones for you both. These hormones can make your baby feel calm and safe and helps you to bond with each other
- If you are feeling anxious or low, then you are not alone. Postnatal depression can affect up to 1 in 10 Dads. Don’t be afraid to ask for support from your health visitor. They may be able to offer you extra support and advice. Your health visitor or GP can also signpost you to other local services such as talking therapies with Time to Talk
