Supervising your child's toothbrushing

In some areas of Hampshire, nurseries and pre-schools are taking part in ‘supervised toothbrushing schemes’. These have been introduced across England by the Government in partnership with Colgate to improve children’s dental health.

As part of the scheme, your child will receive a supply of toothpaste, a toothbrush and an information pack.

Help your child continue what they learned today with these simple steps. They will help protect their teeth and keep them healthy.

Top tips for helping your child brush their teeth properly

  • Brush at least twice a day for about 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste, brush last thing at night and once more each day. Encourage your child to brush their teeth while supervising them. Use a timer, brush along to a song, or download the Brush DJ app.
  • Guide your child’s hand so they can feel the correct movement.
  • Use a mirror to help your child see exactly where the brush is cleaning their teeth.
  • Use a small, soft toothbrush that is right for your child’s age.
  • Brush your child’s teeth using small, circular movements.
  • Remember to gently brush their gums and behind their teeth.
  • Make tooth brushing as fun as possible by using an egg timer to time it for about 2 minutes.
  • Don’t let children run around with a toothbrush in their mouth, as they may have an accident and hurt themselves.

  • Use a fluoride toothpaste: Ideally 1000 to 1500 parts per million (ppm). Children aged 3 years and over should have a pea sized amount of toothpaste
  • Spit don’t rinse after brushing: This will help the fluoride stay in contact with teeth for longer.
  • Reduce sugary foods and drinks: If offering a treat, it is best at a mealtime to reduce the impact on your child’s teeth. Keep to water or plain milk for drinking in between mealtimes.
  • Replace toothbrushes or toothbrush heads: Every three months to make sure they are keeping the teeth clean
  • If your child needs medicine ask for a sugar free option
  • Dentist check ups are free for children on the NHS. You can find your local NHS dentist here.
  • If your child loses or damages a tooth: Phone your dentist or 111 for urgent treatment

Please note: You may choose to use any brand of toothbrush or fluoride toothpaste if you do not wish to use the Colgate supplies provided.
