Did you know that all parents & carers of pre school babies and children have access to the Health Visiting Service?
The Health Visiting service is led by Health Visitors who are qualified nurses and/or midwives who have undertaken additional training in community public health nursing. They are supported by community nursery nurses, community staff nurses, as well as our Infant Feeding and Strengthening Families teams. The service offers a universal service to parents & carers from 28 weeks pregnant through to when a child starts in full time school.
All parents & carers are offered 5 contacts during the first 2 1/2 years of a child’s life.
- Antenatal contact
- New Birth visit
- 6 – 8 week review
- 9 – 12 month health and developmental review
- 2 – 2 1/2 year health and developmental review
These contacts might be digital, telephone, clinic appointments, child health drop ins, or home visits. All families may also need additional support at some stage when their child is young. This might be for health or developmental reasons. A Health Visitor can offer individualised assessments for those needing additional support and provide time limited support packages.
This film produced by the Institute of Health Visiting explains more about the role of a Health Visitor.
