1 and 2 year developmental reviews in Devon

As part of the healthy child programme which health visiting teams deliver, all children in Devon are invited to have a review of their health and developmental when they are between 9 and 12 months (the 1 year review) and between 2 years and 2 years 6 months (the 2 year review). More commonly these appointments will take place around 10 months and 2 years 3 months.

1 year developmental review

Parents/carers will be invited by appointment to share their child’s 1 year developmental review which usually takes place in a clinic setting or sometimes the family home. Your appointment will take place with a member of our health visiting team-often one of our community health workers but sometimes one of our staff nurses or health visitors.

During the appointment, we will explore any questions or concerns about your child’s health or development and provide you with associated advice. Our health visiting team staff member will observe your child during the appointment and discuss with you the different skills that they have developed or are developing. They will also complete growth measurements on your child. This will all help to identify if your child might benefit from further support to achieve their developmental milestones.  This support will include suggestions of things for you to encourage your child to do at home or in an early years setting or childminders. Our teams can support you with this. Sometimes a child might benefit from a referral to another service to support them or for further assessment which our team can facilitate.

We will also discuss with you different health promotion topics and offer you first line advice, offer further support or signpost you to supporting information or agencies. We have recently signed up to the first dental steps project and for the next year (from March/April 2024), we will be offering a dental pack alongside an oral hygiene discussion at this review.

If you have any questions, do ask our team at your appointment. If we are not the right service to offer the information, advice or support, we can help to identify who is.

Don’t forget to bring your red book!

2 year developmental review

Parents/carers will be invited by appointment to share their child’s 2 year developmental review which usually takes place in a clinic setting or sometimes the family home. Your appointment will take place with a member of our health visiting team-often one of our community health workers but sometimes one of our staff nurses or health visitors.

In advance of your appointment, you will be sent the Ages and Stages Questionnaires. You are asked to complete these with your child and bring the completed form to your appointment. Your child may have also had their 2 year progress check completed if they are in an early years setting-if so, please bring this along with you.

At this review, our staff member will complete the ‘ELIM’ which is the early language identification measure and intervention. This doesn’t take long and supports in your child’s amazing abilities within speech, language and communication and will identify if your child might need specific support for some of these skills.
