Do you need advice about how to cope when your baby cries?
Babies crying is normal, and they cry for many reasons. It can be upsetting for you as a parent, but a baby crying is natures way of making sure that parents pay attention to them and give them what they need. A baby might cry when they are hungry, have a wet or dirty nappy, if they are feeling unwell, when they need a cuddle or sometimes for no obvious reason.
The ICON programme
This programme has advice to help parents cope when their baby cries and can help prevent harm coming to the baby because a parent finds it hard to cope.
- I – Infant crying is normal
- C – Comforting methods can help
- O- It’s OK to walk away
- N – Never ever shake a baby
Things that can help:
- Check their nappy
- See if they are hungry
- Check for signs of illness (such as high temperature, unusual rash, difficulty breathing).
If you think your baby is unwell then contact your GP or call NHS 111. If there is no obvious cause then try the following:
- Talking calmly to your baby
- Hum or sing
- Hold them close
- Give them a warm bath
- Go for a walk outside
- If you need to put your baby in a safe place and take a break.
